If you struggle with lower back pain, a simple daily walk could help. A recent study published in JAMA Network Open suggests that walking for just over an hour each day can lower the chances of developing chronic back pain.
Led by Rayane Haddadj, a doctoral student from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the study involved nearly 11,200 participants, averaging 55 years old. They tracked their walking habits using activity monitors for a week and followed up four years later. The findings were surprising: those who walked at least 78 minutes a day were less likely to report long-term back pain. Walking more than 100 minutes reduced the risk by 23%, while those who walked 78 to 100 minutes saw a 13% decrease.
Interestingly, walking speed played a role, too. "Power walkers" who moved quickly had a 15% to 18% lower risk of chronic back pain. However, the total walking duration had a stronger effect than speed alone.
The implications of this research are significant. Back pain is one of the leading causes of missed work and reduced physical activity, particularly in the U.S. Incorporating walking into health strategies could change how we view back pain prevention. The researchers noted, “Walking is easy to implement, accessible, and has many health benefits.”
