Slippery Rock Field Hockey Faces Tough Loss to IUP

On a rainy afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium, the Slippery Rock University field hockey team fell 3-0 to No. 10 Indiana University of Pennsylvania. This defeat marked another tough game in a challenging stretch for The Rock, who have now encountered four top 10 teams in the past two weeks.

With this loss, Slippery Rock’s overall record is now 5-11, including a 1-8 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). They’ve faced stiff competition; eight of their eleven losses came against teams ranked in the Division II top 10. Indiana improves to 8-6 and stands at 5-4 in the PSAC West after this victory.

The game started with IUP taking the lead in the 28th minute. Lilly Fringer scored from a penalty stroke, putting The Hawks ahead 1-0 at halftime. The second half saw two goals from IUP, one from Celeste Gorria Rial and another from Jess Davidson just before the final whistle.

Statistically, IUP dominated the game with 17 total shots compared to Slippery Rock’s 3. They also led in shots on goal (11-2) and penalty corners (11-2). Hilary Hoffman was the standout for The Rock, taking two shots, while Roz Mikulak contributed one. In goal, Leah Riegling made an impressive seven saves.

Despite the loss, Slippery Rock has had its best season since 2022 and will have one more chance to improve its record. They will face Mansfield on Saturday at 1 PM to close out the season.
