Slippery Rock University Athletics: Heartbreaking Loss at Duquesne Exhibition

PITTSBURGH – The Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team faced off against Duquesne University in an exhibition game, ending with a score of 108-53 in favor of Duquesne at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

For Slippery Rock, this game was a chance to prepare for the upcoming season, while it counted for Duquesne, boosting their record to 2-0 this season.

Player Highlights:
Sophia Hook led The Rock with 11 points, making 4 of 6 shots, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. Kayley Joseph-Bernard and Hannah Pugliese each scored eight points, with Pugliese adding solid defensive stats. Freshman Iyanna Wade shined with six assists and tied for the most rebounds on the team.

As a team, Slippery Rock shot 33.9% from the field and 34.5% from three-point range. In contrast, Duquesne recorded 45.9% from the field and 52.2% from long range. They also dominated the boards, grabbing 57 rebounds compared to Slippery Rock’s 29.

Game Flow:
The Rock started strong, hitting four three-pointers in the first ten minutes. However, mistakes, including 12 turnovers, allowed Duquesne to take a commanding 32-15 lead early on. Although Slippery Rock reduced their turnovers in the second quarter, Duquesne’s accuracy from three-point range widened their lead to 66-32 by halftime.

Duquesne built upon their lead in the second half, ultimately sealing the game with a final score of 108-53.

Next Up:
Slippery Rock kicks off their 2025-26 regular season with two games on November 15-16 at the Atlantic Region Challenge in Erie, Pennsylvania. They will face the University of Charleston at 4 p.m. on November 15 and Davis & Elkins College at 2 p.m. on November 16.
