Women’s Cross Country Team Shines at Carnegie Mellon Invitational

The Slippery Rock University women’s cross country team placed third at the Carnegie Mellon University Invitational held on the Youthtowne XC Course. This was quite an achievement, especially without their top runner, Ruthie Hughes.

Edinboro landed the top spot with 54 points, followed by Ashland with 86. SRU rounded out the top three teams with 92 points. Point Park and West Virginia Wesleyan also performed well, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

In total, 183 runners tackled the 5,000-meter course, with 19 teams completing the race.

Jennifer Cichra stood out again, finishing in 10th place with a time of 17:44. Hannah Burgoon followed closely, finishing 19th at 18:07. Carissa Flynn came in 22nd at 18:11, where Sydney Heltzell and Lydia Valeriano rounded out the scoring positions, finishing 26th and 36th, respectively.

Beyond the individual performances, the race set the stage for the upcoming PSAC Championships on October 25, hosted by Edinboro. Coaches believe this experience will boost the team’s confidence heading into the championship season.

Cross country running is more than just a race; it’s about teamwork and strategy. As coach Bob McGraw notes, each runner plays a crucial role, and the team’s performance can often rely on how well they work together, especially when facing tough competition.
