The Jefferson County Family Resource Center collaborates with the Grace Klein Community to distribute food boxes twice a month. They provide a mix of nutritious options, including fruits, vegetables, bread, and meat. Carrie Buntain, the executive director of the Jefferson County Family Resource Center, highlights the increasing demand for these services. In 2023 alone, they distributed 4,752 food boxes, and in 2024, they expect this number to rise.
This year, they have already given out more than 2,000 food boxes. Families often line up hours before the official start time of 1 p.m. because the need is so urgent. One individual in line, Kajuana Griffin, shared how receiving these boxes helps her save money for other essential expenses. “Every little bit helps,” she said, mentioning that this aid even extends to pet food.
Janice Dunning is another regular participant. With limited food stamp support of just $43 a month, she relies heavily on these food distributions. She reflected on her situation: “I really need it,” she said plainly.
Current statistics reveal that thousands of households face food insecurity. According to Feeding America, 38 million Americans struggle to find enough food. The challenges are not just financial; they’re also deeply personal.
Experts recommend practical tips to save on groceries. Planning meals, shopping with a list, and using coupons can make a significant difference in monthly expenses.
Buntain emphasizes that their mission isn’t just about food but about supporting families in any way they can. “We’re here to help maximize the money in their pocket,” she affirmed. The food box distributions are open to everyone in need.
This month, food boxes will be available on September 12th in Bessemer and again on September 26th in Birmingham.
