Braden Smith, a guard for Purdue, has made headlines by becoming the Big Ten’s all-time assists leader. He scored 14 points and notched 12 assists during Purdue’s recent 89-73 victory over Wisconsin. With a total of 893 assists, he surpassed Cassius Winston, who previously held the record with 890 assists from 2017 to 2020.

Smith’s future goals are ambitious. He aims to break the Division I career assists record of 1,076, held by Bobby Hurley from Duke. With 17 games left in the season, Smith is 183 assists shy of that record. He currently leads all Division I players, averaging 9.6 assists per game.
Interestingly, Smith’s competitive spirit shone through during the game against Wisconsin. Even with three fouls, he remained in the game, helping to extend Purdue’s lead. His record-breaking assist came when he drove to the basket and passed to Oscar Cluff for a three-point play.
