DULUTH, Minn. — With the government shutdown halting SNAP benefits, many local food shelves and pantries are stepping up to help those in need. As of now, SNAP applications are no longer being approved, and November benefits are not being distributed.
Community resources, like food shelves, play a crucial role in supporting families facing food insecurity. Last year, Minnesota saw nearly 9 million visits to food shelves, a significant increase from 7.5 million the year prior. “Food insecurity is a big issue,” says Dan Furry, PR and Communications Director for The Salvation Army Northern Division.
The rising need highlights the importance of community support. Volunteering and donating can greatly impact local initiatives. During the pandemic, many people stepped up to help those who lost jobs and income due to shutdowns. “We saw generosity flourish when it was most needed,” Furry notes.
While food donations are appreciated, cash donations are even more effective. They allow shelves to purchase essential items and maximize their resources. The Duluth Salvation Army offers food shelves twice a week, a medical food shelf weekly, and hot lunch programs on weekdays for those needing assistance.
