Snow White First Reactions: A Stunning Visual Feast and Disney’s Best Live-Action Remake in Years!

Disney’s live-action remake of "Snow White" has premiered, and early reactions suggest it’s a hit. Critics are praising the film for its fresh take on the classic tale.

According to Katcy Stephan of Variety, the lead, Rachel Zegler, shines as Snow White. She describes the film as a “visual feast” filled with new musical numbers and whimsical animated animals. The story gives Snow White more depth, showcasing her ambition to lead, inspired by her late father.

Online critic Christopher also commended the film, calling it one of Disney’s best live-action remakes. He noted that Zegler brings a magical performance to the role.

Paul Klein, editor at Filmhounds, enjoyed the film but expressed disappointment with the CGI dwarves. He found the musical numbers enjoyable, particularly the opening scene.

Director Marc Webb, known for 500 Days of Summer, leads this reimagining of the 1937 animated classic. The movie tells the story of Snow White, who escapes her evil stepmother, played by Gal Gadot, and teams up with seven dwarfs to reclaim her kingdom. Andrew Burnap joins the cast as a new love interest for Snow White.

This remake is part of Disney’s ongoing strategy to revive its animated classics in live-action formats. There’s also a live-action version of "Lilo & Stitch" scheduled for release this May.

The journey to this film’s release has not been without its challenges. Initially slated to start filming in March 2020, production was stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and only resumed in March 2022. Emotional reactions emerged along the way, particularly when Zegler called the original animated film "dated," criticizing the portrayal of the prince who "stalks" Snow White.

Zegler has emphasized that her character’s story is more about her aspirations than waiting to be saved by a prince. “She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be,” she stated during a D23 interview.

Peter Dinklage, known for his role in Game of Thrones, also raised eyebrows about the film’s use of CGI for the dwarfs, rather than casting actors. He questioned the decision to tell the original story with such a significant change in casting.

"Snow White" opens in theaters on March 21. As audiences anticipate the release, discussions continue regarding the balance of tradition and modern storytelling in film adaptations.
