SoCal Bachelor Partygoers Among Victims of Reno Mass Shooting: A Tragic Reminder of Safety Concerns

Three people lost their lives in a tragic mass shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno early Monday morning. Among the victims were friends from Southern California, who were in town for a bachelor party.

The chaos started around 7:30 a.m. when a gunman approached a group waiting for rides outside the casino. Friends reported that the shooter initially attempted to fire, but his weapon jammed. When he finally got it working, he opened fire, causing panic as people scrambled for safety.

Andrew Canepa was hit multiple times and later died at the hospital. He was a beloved father and owner of SideStreet Cafe in Newbury Park. Another friend, Dylan McLean, managed to escape to a truck and asked the driver to take him to a hospital. He was shot in the shoulder but stayed focused, calling his friend Matt Harper Sitler, who was hiding after being shot several times.

Sitler was in serious condition but showed signs of improvement later, asking about Canepa’s condition. Another friend passed away instantly in the attack but has not been identified yet.

All the individuals involved were graduates of Thousand Oaks High School from 2010 and had a close bond, playing sports together during their high school years. They had spent the night at a nearby Airbnb and were just about to head to the airport when the shooting occurred.

The rapid response from a security guard at the resort helped bring the situation under control. The guard engaged the shooter, who then fled but encountered a vehicle in the parking lot and shot the driver. The police arrived shortly afterward and apprehended the suspect after a shootout, leaving him critically injured.

“This kind of violence is devastating for any community,” Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance remarked. “It impacts not just the victims, but everyone around them.”

In total, three people died, and three others were wounded, including the gunman. Authorities stated there seemed to be no known connection between the shooter and the victims, and the motive remains unclear.

The Grand Sierra Resort, one of Reno’s largest hotel and casino complexes, has a history of entertainment and hospitality, known for its extensive facilities. Despite the tragedy, the resort was operational the following day.

Mass shootings like this have become alarmingly common in the U.S., with data indicating that there were at least 647 mass shootings in 2022 alone, according to the Gun Violence Archive. This incident underscores the urgent need for discussions around gun control and community safety.
