Somalia Unveils National Climate Fund: A Bold Step to Combat Droughts and Floods

On August 27–28, Somalia launched its first-ever National Climate Fund in Mogadishu. This fund aims to attract international financing for climate projects vital to battling increasing droughts, floods, and severe weather.

During a two-day workshop, over 60 officials from the government, private sector, and civil society gathered to create a roadmap for the fund. They also kicked off the Somali Climate Finance Trial, a pilot program aimed at connecting Somalia with global funding sources like the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund.

Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh emphasized that climate financing is a major focus. He explained, “This fund will help us respond better to urgent climate challenges and work toward a sustainable future.” His words highlight the government’s commitment to handling resources fairly and reaching communities most in need.

Co-chair of the launch, Environment Minister Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, noted that this initiative represents a unified approach to addressing climate finance. He believes that by working together, the government can meet both immediate and long-term needs.

Liban Obsiye, the fund’s executive director, pointed out that partnerships are essential. He said, “Access to climate finance will help us focus on our national needs and protect vulnerable communities impacted by climate change.” This aligns with broader trends observed globally, where climate action often relies on cooperation between various sectors.

The fund was established by a decree from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, aiming to create a robust system for raising and managing climate resources. By including various stakeholders, including private-sector and civil society representatives, the fund aims to enhance Somalia’s credibility with international donors and ensure resource accountability.

According to data from the UN, developing nations face an annual financing gap of around $70 billion for climate change adaptation and mitigation. With this new fund, Somalia is taking a significant step towards closing that gap, promising support for communities at the forefront of climate impacts.

As this initiative unfolds, experts expect it to set an example for other nations grappling with climate challenges. Somalia’s proactive approach could inspire similar efforts elsewhere, showcasing how targeted funding and partnerships can foster resilience and stability in the face of climate change.
