South Africa’s U-18 baseball team, ranked 31st in the world, showcased their talent by sweeping Zimbabwe in the African Championship. This decisive victory secured their place in the upcoming WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2025, presented by RAXUS. The South African team dominated the series, outscoring their opponents 100-7.
The games took place at the Boksburg Baseball Club over the weekend, with matches held on January 17, 18, and a final game on January 19.
The results of the matches were impressive:
- South Africa 19 – Zimbabwe 1
- South Africa 19 – Zimbabwe 1
- South Africa 24 – Zimbabwe 3
- South Africa 22 – Zimbabwe 0
- South Africa 16 – Zimbabwe 2
The South African Baseball Federation expressed their gratitude to the Boksburg club for hosting. Chairman Gavin Watkins and his team ensured the fields were in great shape, even managing issues like wet conditions on the first day. Their hard work was key to the tournament’s success.
As of now, 11 out of the 12 participants for the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2025 have been confirmed. The teams that have earned their spots include:
- Americas: USA (5), Panama (8), Puerto Rico (9), Cuba (10)
- Asia: Japan (1), Chinese Taipei (2), Korea (6)
- Europe: Italy (14), Germany (17)
- Oceania: Australia (12)
The tournament is set to take place in Okinawa, Japan, from September 5 to 14, 2025. One Wild Card team will still be announced, rounding out the roster for this exciting event.
