South African Star Jason Fogle Aims for Glory at FISU World University Games 2023

Jason Fogle, a talented tennis player from Stellenbosch University, has some exciting news. He was chosen to represent South Africa at the FISU Games in Germany from July 16 to 27. This is his second time wearing the national colors after competing at the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China, earlier this year. He feels honored to represent his country, stating, “When you play, you represent not just yourself, but your whole nation.” This motivation drives him to work harder in tough matches.

Reflecting on his previous experience at the FISU Games, Fogle says it was incredible. “It’s not like a regular tournament. You get to learn from athletes in so many different sports.” He aims to improve his performance this time by focusing more on his nutrition. He wants to fuel his body with the best food to enhance his game.

At just 22, Fogle is pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting while balancing his studies with tennis. He began playing tennis at six, starting with private lessons. Although he enjoyed various sports like rugby and soccer, he fell in love with tennis and decided to dedicate more time to it.

Fogle has learned valuable lessons from tennis. “It teaches discipline, helps you handle pressure, and builds resilience,” he shares. His journey has also allowed him to travel and experience diverse cultures, building friendships along the way.

As he prepares for the Games, Fogle recently finished his exams, allowing him to focus fully on his training. The team is preparing for clay courts, which differ from the hard courts common in South Africa. To adapt, they have a final training camp on clay in Potchefstroom before traveling to Germany.

Watching high-stakes matches inspires Fogle. The recent Roland-Garros final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner caught his attention. He found their endurance astonishing. “It’s incredible how they can play at such a high level for over five hours. It pushes me to work even harder in training,” he says.

Fogle admires tennis greats like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. He sees Djokovic’s performance at 37 as a motivator, encouraging him to never give up on the court.

Looking ahead, Fogle is excited about competing in Germany. He can’t wait to experience the unique clay courts and immerse himself in German culture while connecting with athletes from around the world. Good luck, Jason!
