Food truck owners in Fort Lauderdale are feeling the pinch from rising costs. The price of gas, driven by events like the ongoing war in Iran, is a major factor. Victor Suarez, who runs JB’s Cheesesteak in downtown, notes, “Every single item we buy is up.” He switched to a more efficient propane generator to save money, but the future is uncertain. “We haven’t changed our prices in three years, but that might have to change soon,” he said, expressing concern about what’s ahead.
At a food truck park on Marina Mile, Fabien Gobin, owner of The French Touch, shares similar worries. He can plug into electric outlets at the park but still faces high gas costs when traveling to events. For Reno Campbell, who co-owns Jerkie’s Grill, the situation is tougher. His older truck isn’t fuel-efficient, making trips costly. “Going to West Palm Beach last Saturday really hit our wallet,” he said, acknowledging the tough decisions ahead. “If prices keep rising, we’ll have to pass those costs onto customers.”
This concern is echoed by AAA Florida spokesman Mark Jenkins. He reports that oil prices are going up, currently over $80 a barrel, which could lead to higher gas prices soon. For every $6 rise in oil, we might see a 15-cent jump at the pump.
In fact, a recent survey by Morning Consult reported that 45% of food truck owners say they may have to raise prices to cope with increased costs. This trend isn’t just local; it’s felt across the country as many small businesses adjust to a shifting economic landscape. According to the National Restaurant Association, nearly 50% of all restaurants faced a similar situation last year, highlighting a growing issue in the food industry.
