LAREDO, Tex. – The South Texas Food Bank is on a mission to reach more kids in Laredo. They’re teaming up with the Bethesda Center, which provides shelter for children.
For years, the Food Bank has been a crucial support for the community. Through its Kid’s Cafe program, over 500 children and teens get meals every day from 13 locations in the city.
Many Laredo residents, like Gloria Arrendo and Andres Gomez, believe this kind of help is essential. Arrendo mentions, “We need it everywhere around Laredo—north, south, east, and west.” Gomez adds, “More programs like this would be great for our community.”
Juan Jose Martinez, the Child Nutrition Program Coordinator, shared that they’re finalizing expansion plans. It usually takes one to two weeks to get approval from the Texas Department of Agriculture before they can open a new site. This will ensure more local children have access to meals.
This expansion reflects a commitment to ongoing support for community needs. With the Food Bank’s efforts, Laredo is taking a proactive step toward ensuring no child goes hungry.
According to Feeding America, food insecurity affects 1 in 7 children in the U.S. Programs like Kid’s Cafe help combat that statistic, emphasizing the importance of community action.
