Volunteer Services has kicked off an exciting new initiative on campus: the SAU Recycling Trailer program! This effort, led by Kathy Gean, is part of a push for better sustainability. The program was funded by a grant from the Southwest Arkansas Planning and Development District Inc.
Under the guidance of Katie Tejada, Volunteer Services has been making strides in promoting recycling on campus. They’ve set up recycling bins in residence halls and have organized awareness campaigns, like informational fliers and participation in volunteer fairs. From spring 2023 to spring 2024, the campus community recycled 3,350 pounds of materials like cardboard, plastics, and aluminum. This shows a strong commitment to recycling and sustainability.
Isabella Bernard, a former student worker for Volunteer Services, expressed her enthusiasm for the project. “I was excited and grateful,” she shared. “This grant helps our university improve sustainability efforts and supports Abilities Unlimited. It boosted my confidence in working toward a greener campus.” Isabella graduated with a degree in psychology in 2024.
The recycling trailer was custom-made by L.C. Manufacturing in Lafayette County. It’s conveniently placed at the northeast corner of the Reynolds Center parking lot, making it easy for everyone to access. Through ongoing partnerships with Abilities Unlimited and AmeriCorps, the trailer will be regularly serviced, and the recyclables collected will benefit this local nonprofit.
So, what can you recycle? The trailer accepts plastic, aluminum, cardboard, and paper. This program not only promotes environmental responsibility but also supports local initiatives.
As we face increasing challenges related to climate change, such efforts are crucial. According to recent studies, approximately 30% of waste generated in college settings could be recycled. Programs like SAU’s can significantly reduce landfill contributions and encourage sustainable practices among students.
In today’s digital age, many students are discussing recycling on social media, creating awareness and sharing tips. This trend reflects a growing desire for eco-friendliness among the younger generation, showing that they genuinely care about the planet.
Ultimately, the SAU Recycling Trailer program is a step toward a more sustainable future. By engaging the campus community, it sets a foundation for responsible waste management and environmental stewardship.
