Southern Arkansas University is celebrating a special moment: its first graduating class for the EdD in Rural and Diverse Educational Leadership program. This milestone will take place on Saturday, May 10, at 9:00 A.M. in the W.T. Watson Athletic Center gymnasium.
Dr. Angela Stanford, the program director, expressed her pride, saying, “Graduating our first class is a tremendous milestone—not only for SAU, but for the students who have dedicated themselves to this journey and the rural communities they serve.” These graduates, showing resilience and passion, are already making a difference in their regions.
The EdD program began in Fall 2021, enrolling 32 students from a diverse mix of backgrounds across 23 counties, plus a few from Louisiana, Missouri, and Vermont. The group includes superintendents, faculty members, administrators, and experienced teachers, reflecting a wide range of educational practices.
This program is designed to address the unique challenges faced by leaders in rural educational settings. It offers advanced training that combines research with practical strategies, aiming to strengthen leadership across schools, colleges, and community organizations.
On May 9, the graduates will gather for a private showcase to present their research. It’s a key moment for them to share their findings with invited guests, highlighting their hard work and insights.
If you can’t make it to the ceremony, you can watch it live on the SAU Facebook page. For more details about the EdD program, visit their official page at web.saumag.edu/edd.
As educational leadership evolves, programs like this one are critical. According to a recent study, rural areas often face significant obstacles, including fewer resources and greater teacher shortages. Preparing leaders who understand these challenges can make a profound impact on educational outcomes.
The commitment of these graduates, along with their innovative ideas, positions them as vital assets to their communities. Their journey reflects a growing trend in education that emphasizes inclusivity and responsiveness to local needs.
