Southern Arkansas University’s Strategic Plan and Fire Training Academy

Southern Arkansas University is shaping its future with a new strategic plan. The board of trustees recently approved the outline for "The Mulerider Trail to 2030." The plan aims to nurture future leaders through education, scholarship, and service.

President Bruno Hicks explained that the university’s mission is to provide opportunities for growth and career preparation. Core values emphasize that education enriches lives and strengthens democracy.

The strategic plan focuses on several key areas:

Fire Training Academy Milestone

The Arkansas Fire Training Academy, located at SAU Tech, recently earned re-accreditation from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress. Chancellor Jerry Thomas noted that this achievement highlights the academy’s commitment to quality training, attracting students from across the region.

The academy has unique offerings, such as Arkansas’s only radiation lab, made possible by equipment donations from Lockheed Martin.

Recent graduates, Jonathon Hawkins and Gregory Stricklin, shared their experiences. Hawkins found the academy challenged him but provided a solid foundation for his career with the Magnolia Fire Department. He praised the knowledgeable instructors for their real-world insights.

Stricklin noted the personal growth he experienced. He learned to push his limits with the guidance of mentors who connect lessons to real-life applications.

Current Trends and Insights

Interestingly, recent data from a National Fire Protection Association report indicates that firefighter employment is expected to grow by 6% from 2021 to 2031, faster than the average for all occupations. This growth reflects the increasing need for skilled firefighters nationwide.

As SAU continues to enhance educational opportunities, its initiatives stand out in a rapidly changing job market. The university is committed to shaping future professionals who are ready for both challenges and opportunities.
