Southern University Unveils Exciting New Student-Run Radio Station WSUB 106.1 FM: Tune In for Fresh Voices and Local Vibes!

Southern University’s Department of Mass Communication is launching its own radio station, WSUB 106.1 LPFM, known as “The Bluff.” This new venture comes after a partnership with the Louisiana Community Development Capital Fund.

WSUB will be entirely run by the department, with students, faculty, and staff involved in daily programming. This station takes over from WTQT, which had been a gospel station for many years.

Dr. Yolanda Campbell, the interim chair of the department, expressed pride in this initiative. She’s excited about how this hands-on experience will prepare students for careers in media. “Seeing our students in action is what it’s all about,” she said.

The station will not only train students in radio and podcasting but also highlight the vibrant culture of Southern University. Programming will focus on local talent, educational content, and cultural awareness.

WSUB will offer a mix of gospel, hip-hop, R&B, and pop music, broadcasting 24/7. This blend aims to engage audiences while helping students sharpen their broadcasting skills.

Leadership for the station includes Dr. Campbell as manager, with alumni Nicolette Gordon as operations manager. Jacque Griffin, who has a rich background in radio with WTQT, will continue as program director at WSUB.

This new station represents more than just music; it’s about community connection. As Dr. Campbell notes, “Radio has always been about community. Southern is ready to be a strong voice for Baton Rouge, blending music with meaningful content.”

This initiative comes at a time when community radio is gaining recognition for its role in fostering local identity and providing a platform for diverse voices. According to a recent survey by the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, community radio has seen a 42% increase in listenership over the past five years, highlighting the importance of local programming.

WSUB aims to be a part of this trend while providing students with invaluable real-world experience. As the media landscape evolves, practical training like this will be crucial for future broadcasters. By embracing this opportunity, Southern University is stepping into a significant role in its community, both artistically and socially.
