Southwestern University Celebrates $1 Million Donation with Exciting New Stage Name Reveal!

GEORGETOWN, Texas — In a heartwarming tribute, Southwestern University’s Alma Thomas Theater now features a named stage thanks to a generous $1 million gift from alumnus Roger Edward Davidson’s estate. The Davidson Stage will host a variety of performances, enhancing the cultural life at Southwestern.

The Alma Thomas Theater is a stunning venue with 720 seats, an orchestra pit, and top-notch lighting. It’s a hub for everything from theater shows to concerts, drawing in crowds year-round.

Roger Davidson, who graduated with a degree in music in 1949, had a deep love for the performing arts. During his time at Southwestern, he played in the band and orchestra and was an active member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. In the 1950s and 1960s, he continued his musical journey as a part-time musician.

After retiring, Davidson became involved with the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra in Colorado. He joined their Board of Directors in 2002 and served as Vice President until his passing in 2011. His commitment to music and the arts was unwavering, and he often returned to Southwestern to support various initiatives, including rebuilding the fraternity house in 2007 at the age of 81.

Vice President for University Relations, Marie Muhvic, remarked on Davidson’s legacy. She said, “We are deeply honored to celebrate his extraordinary love for Southwestern and his commitment to the arts. This gift serves as a testament to the impact of planned giving and will inspire future generations.”

Recent studies show that donations to educational institutions often yield large returns in community benefits and student engagement. In fact, a survey conducted by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education found that alumni who give back to their universities significantly contribute to cultural and educational development. Davidson’s bequest highlights how individual contributions can make a lasting impact.

With the naming of the Davidson Stage, the theater not only honors a beloved alumnus but also ensures that his passion for music and the arts continues to thrive at Southwestern. This milestone is a reminder of how legacy and philanthropy can shape the future of education and creativity.
