LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In an exciting finish, Sovereignty outpaced 3-1 favorite Journalism to secure victory at the 151st Kentucky Derby on a rainy Saturday.
This marked trainer Bill Mott’s second Derby win; he previously triumphed in 2019 when Country House was awarded the title after the disqualification of Maximum Security. This time, Mott felt confident as Sovereignty stormed down the stretch.
This win broke a 13-year drought for owner Godolphin, the stable of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum from Dubai.
It was a remarkable weekend for Sheikh Mohammed. His filly, Good Cheer, won the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, and earlier on Saturday, Ruling Court claimed victory in the 2,000 Guineas in Britain.
Sovereignty completed the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:02.31, paying out $17.96 for a winning $2 bet at 7-1 odds.
Journalism encountered difficulties early on, prompting jockey Umberto Rispoli to steer him wide. The two horses battled head-to-head at the eighth pole, but Sovereignty, ridden by Junior Alvarado, pulled ahead in the final moments.
In the final standings, Baeza took third, followed by Final Gambit in fourth and Owen Almighty in fifth.
The weather played a significant role, making the Churchill Downs dirt track sloppy. Fans sheltered their outfits under plastic ponchos, a sight often seen on such rainy Derby days.
