Traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange saw some ups and downs recently. After a tough day, the markets seemed to rebound a bit. S&P 500 futures rose by 0.56%, and Nasdaq 100 futures increased by 0.79%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also gained 147 points, which is about 0.35%.

This bounce back comes after the S&P 500 dropped 1.4% on Thursday. The decline brought the S&P 500 down 10.1% from its recent high, officially marking it in correction territory. A correction is a drop of 10% or more from a peak. The Dow and Nasdaq have also struggled, losing 1.3% and nearly 2%, respectively.
Interestingly, the Nasdaq is now more than 10% lower for the year, and the small-cap focused Russell 2000 index has dropped around 19% from its peak. A bear market is usually defined as a drop of 20%, so the Russell 2000 isn’t too far away from that.
This downturn comes amid ongoing uncertainty about trade policies from the government. Analysts, including Adam Turnquist, the chief technical strategist at LPL Financial, point to tariff issues as a major factor in driving market volatility. “In only a few weeks, the broader market has gone from record highs to correction territory,” he noted. Investors are understandably getting nervous.
As for consumer sentiment, we should see fresh numbers soon. These figures could shape how investors feel about the market and might be influenced by inflation reports released earlier this week. Looking ahead, there’s a significant Federal Reserve meeting next week. Many are predicting a 98% chance that interest rates will stay the same, according to CME’s FedWatch tool.
The mood on social media reflects this uncertainty, with users expressing mixed feelings about the market’s direction. Some are worried about the impacts of inflation and trade policies, while others see this as a buying opportunity, hoping for a rebound.
Overall, the market is in a tricky spot. With many eyes on upcoming economic data and Fed meetings, it’s clear that traders and investors will need to stay alert as they navigate this challenging landscape.
