Two private companies are teaming up to tackle the growing problem of space debris in low Earth orbit. Portal Space Systems from the U.S. is partnering with Australia’s Paladin Space to create a service called Debris Removal as a Service (DRAAS). This service aims to clear multiple debris objects in a single mission.
The collaboration was announced on March 19. It combines Portal’s advanced Starburst spacecraft with Paladin’s Triton payload, which is designed to image, classify, and capture tumbling debris that measures less than a meter across.
Experts warn that there are around 130 million pieces of junk orbiting the Earth. This waste ranges from tiny fragments to large abandoned spacecraft. The risk of collision is a serious concern for space operations. Jeff Thornburg, CEO of Portal Space Systems, explains, “Maintaining satellite infrastructure requires active debris management.”
Harrison Box, CEO of Paladin Space, adds that their Triton technology can remove dozens of small debris pieces in one mission. This changes the game for satellite operators, making debris removal more feasible and affordable.
The interest in this service is growing. Starlab Space has already expressed intent to integrate DRAAS into future operations. Portal plans to launch its Starburst-1 spacecraft in late 2026 as part of SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. This could open the door for commercial launches starting in 2027. Earlier in April, Portal also secured $50 million in Series A funding to enhance its spacecraft development.
With the situation worsening, companies are under pressure to find effective solutions. Managing space debris is not just a technical issue; it’s crucial for the future of satellite communications, weather monitoring, and national security. “This isn’t just an experimental project; it’s about making debris removal a reality,” says Thornburg.
