CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX successfully brought a new team of astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) on Saturday. The journey took just 15 hours, showcasing efficient space travel.
The crew includes NASA’s Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, along with Japan’s Kimiya Yui and Russia’s Oleg Platonov. They launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and will replace astronauts who have been on the ISS since March. SpaceX plans to return the previous crew as soon as Wednesday.
Cardman shared her excitement upon reaching the ISS, saying, “It was such an unbelievably beautiful sight to see the space station come into our view for the first time.” Fincke added a friendly greeting to the station over radio: “Hello, space station!”
Interestingly, the astronaut lineup changed due to various circumstances. Cardman and a fellow astronaut were shifted from a SpaceX flight last year to accommodate Boeing Starliner test pilots Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who ended up staying far longer than planned. Fincke and Yui were originally set for a Starliner mission that is now delayed until 2026 due to technical issues. Platonov, on the other hand, had previously been sidelined from a Soyuz launch due to health issues.
The ISS now temporarily hosts 11 astronauts.
In terms of travel speed, while this latest crew’s trip was impressive, the Russians still hold the record for the fastest trip to the ISS, which took just three hours. Fast travel is becoming essential as more nations and private companies aim for space exploration.
As humanity pushes further into space, experts point to the importance of efficient vehicle design and international collaboration in space missions. According to a recent NASA report, over 80 countries have space programs now, indicating a significant growth in global interest in space exploration.
