SpaceX is navigating some challenges with Starship’s upper stage after recent setbacks, but they’re showing significant progress with the rocket’s powerful booster, Super Heavy.

On Thursday, SpaceX conducted a successful test of a flight-proven Super Heavy booster at their Starbase site in South Texas. The test, which lasted about eight seconds, produced a bright orange flame that signifies the rocket’s readiness. This booster, known as Booster 14, had previously made a trip to the edge of space and is now gearing up for another launch.
This test is pivotal. If all goes well, Booster 14 could be part of SpaceX’s next Starship launch. A successful reflight would mark a major milestone for the Starship program, especially as engineers troubleshoot issues on the upper stage of the rocket, generally referred to as the ship.
Super Heavy is a true marvel of engineering, equipped with 33 methane-fueled Raptor engines that generate nearly 17 million pounds of thrust—double what NASA’s Saturn V produced during its lunar missions. Just to visualize its size, think of a Boeing 747 jet standing upright!
So far, SpaceX has conducted eight full-scale test flights of Starship, with Super Heavy and its upper stage combined reaching an impressive height of 404 feet. While the upper stage faces some technical hurdles, the booster has performed solidly, achieving seven successful launches since its inaugural flight had a rough start.
Remarkably, SpaceX has managed to recover three Super Heavy boosters in four attempts, showing strong progress in reusable rocket technology. For comparison, the Falcon 9 rockets have achieved 426 landings, showcasing SpaceX’s expertise in reusing rockets effectively.
SpaceX made history back in March 2017 when they reused a Falcon 9 booster for the first time. This milestone came after extensive refurbishing, which involved a thorough inspection, ground tests, and transportation back to the launch site. That process has paved the way for their current strategies in rocket recovery and reuse.
