A SpaceX mission to bring home two NASA astronauts from the International Space Station (ISS) faced a setback on Wednesday due to a launch pad issue. This delay means Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will remain in orbit a bit longer, having already spent nine months in space.
The mission was postponed less than four hours before the Falcon rocket was set to launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Engineers noticed a problem with the hydraulic system. This system is crucial for maneuvering the rocket just before liftoff. As the countdown was underway, the crew was strapped into their capsule, ready for lift-off. Unfortunately, less than an hour before launch, the decision was made to cancel for the day. Now, the launch is rescheduled for at least Friday.
Once launched, the new crew—comprising astronauts from the US, Japan, and Russia—will take over for Wilmore and Williams. They have been aboard the ISS since June after a series of technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner capsule forced them to stay longer than planned. Originally, their mission was supposed to last just a week, but due to Starliner’s complications, they made an unexpected shift to SpaceX for their return.
