Just before the holidays, SpaceX made strides toward the next test flight of its Starship megarocket. On Christmas Eve, they shared a photo on X of the Super Heavy booster meant for Starship Flight 12, proudly captioning it “Stacking complete.”

While SpaceX hasn’t set a specific launch date, they expect it to happen in the first quarter of this year. This comes after a delay caused by the previous Super Heavy booster, which buckled during testing in late November, forcing the team to prepare a new vehicle.

Starship stands out as the largest and most powerful rocket ever, towering over 400 feet (122 meters) when fully stacked. It consists of two reusable parts: the Super Heavy booster and the upper stage, known simply as Starship, which stands 171 feet (52 meters) tall.

Last year, Starship flew five times. The first three flights faced issues, but the last two in August and October went smoothly. This upcoming Flight 12 aims to continue that success while also testing the new “Version 3” design. This version is slightly taller and will use SpaceX’s latest Raptor 3 engine.

According to a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, SpaceX aims to use Starship for missions beyond Earth, including to Mars. Elon Musk has expressed interest in launching uncrewed Starships to the Red Planet later this year. This opportunity arises about every 26 months when Earth and Mars are optimally aligned for travel.

Before that ambitious journey can happen, Starship needs to achieve several milestones, including reaching Earth orbit and mastering in-space refueling. This technology is crucial for long-duration space missions.
