SpaceX is set to launch 27 Starlink V2 Mini satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California this Monday, April 7. The launch is scheduled for 3 p.m. PDT (6 p.m. EDT). If necessary, they have a window that can extend another 3.5 hours.
Just over eight minutes into the flight, SpaceX will attempt to land the Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage on a droneship in the ocean. If this goes as planned, it will mark the 124th successful landing for the drone ship named “Of Course I Still Love You.” So far, SpaceX has accomplished 428 booster landings in total.
This launch will debut a new Falcon 9 first stage booster, likely designated B1091. This is the second new booster SpaceX has introduced this year, following B1092, which was used in February.
SpaceX is committed to reusing boosters as much as possible. Their aim is to have each booster capable of making up to 40 flights. So far in 2024, they have launched six new boosters, following four in 2023 and six in 2022. Currently, there are 18 Falcon boosters actively in use, with 11 based on the East Coast and seven on the West Coast.
Interestingly, SpaceX’s strategy has significantly changed over the years. Initially, every launch required a new booster. Now, with their focus on refurbishment, they are making strides toward sustainability in space travel. According to a recent report from the Space Data Association, reusing rockets has reduced the cost of launches by nearly 30% on average, making space access more affordable.
SpaceX’s innovation extends beyond just booster landings. The company’s Starlink project aims to provide global internet coverage, especially in underserved areas. A recent survey indicated that about 30% of rural residents in the U.S. still lack access to reliable internet. Starlink could significantly change this by offering high-speed connections, even in remote locations.
