SpaceX is gearing up for an exciting launch of the Falcon 9 rocket, marking its 21st flight for this first-stage booster. It will lift the SpainSat NG 2 satellite, which weighs 6.1 tons (about 13,448 pounds), into a geosynchronous transfer orbit. Once in space, the satellite will navigate to its final geostationary position.
Liftoff from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is planned for a four-hour window starting at 9:30 p.m. EDT (0130 UTC), with a very promising forecast of 95% favorable weather conditions.
This launch will be number 134 for SpaceX in 2025, matching all of its launches in 2024. The company is pushing to exceed 170 launches this year. According to recent data, SpaceX aims to become the leader in the space launch industry, emphasizing efficiency and reliability.
The SpainSat NG 2 is the second of two satellites created by Hisdesat, a Spanish space company. The first satellite, SpainSat NG 1, was launched earlier this year and became fully operational in August. Together, they will provide advanced secure communication services for Spain and other European nations through NATO and the EU’s Govsatcom program.
Each satellite has a lifespan of around 15 years and is built on the Eurostar Neo platform by Airbus. They feature a wingspan of nearly 50 meters (164 feet). The project received significant funding from the Spanish government, marking a move towards strengthening Spain’s position in Europe’s satellite communication landscape. Diana Morant, Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, highlighted this satellite as a game changer for Spanish industry and innovation.
