SpaceX’s Advanced Super Heavy Booster Passes Rigorous Cryoproof Testing in Just Four Days!

The new Super Heavy booster, which will launch SpaceX’s next Starship flight, has passed its cryogenic proof testing. This is an essential step, especially after the last booster was destroyed during testing.

SpaceX shared this good news via social media, saying, “Cryoproof operations complete for the first time with a Super Heavy V3 booster.” This testing checked the booster’s new propellant systems and its strength.

Last week, teams moved the impressive 237-foot-tall stainless-steel booster from the factory to Massey’s Test Site in Texas. They began with a pressure test at normal temperatures, then loaded the booster with super-cold liquid nitrogen four times over six days. This process subjected the booster to extreme temperature changes and pressure cycles. The nitrogen mimics the cryogenic methane and liquid oxygen used during an actual launch.

This test is vital because it brings engineers closer to the first flight of the upgraded Starship V3. Last year, SpaceX launched the earlier version, Starship V2, five times. Unfortunately, the first three flights did not meet their goals, but the last two did, prompting the move to V3.

What’s different this time? The Super Heavy booster that was meant for the first flight of V3 failed during a pressure test in November, causing the liquid oxygen tank to rupture. After that setback, SpaceX switched to Booster 19. Thankfully, this new booster passed the stress testing with flying colors. It has now returned to the factory where technicians will add 33 advanced Raptor engines and install grid fins.

The Raptor engines for V3 are not just a repeat of the older models. They are designed to produce more thrust and have improved reliability. According to SpaceX, the Raptor 3 engines are lighter, with plumbing and sensors built directly into the main structure. This development makes it easier to combine various functions into a more efficient design.
