On May 1, SpaceX launched its first Falcon 9 mission of the month. This mission, designated Starlink 6-75, carried 28 new satellites into orbit, joining the existing fleet of over 7,300 Starlink satellites that are helping to provide internet access worldwide. The rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 9:51 p.m. EDT.

The 45th Weather Squadron predicted a more than 95% chance of good weather for the launch. They noted that strong high pressure over the western Atlantic resulted in mostly dry conditions, allowing for a smooth launch day despite some high clouds.

This mission used booster B1080, which marked its 18th flight. The booster has previously supported private astronaut missions and cargo deliveries to the International Space Station. Eight minutes after liftoff, it successfully landed on the droneship ‘Just Read the Instructions.’ This landing was the 118th for that ship and the 440th overall for SpaceX boosters.

May’s launch marks SpaceX’s 51st Falcon 9 mission of 2025. The company has been consistent, averaging 12-13 launches each month. If this pace continues, SpaceX could reach between 146 and 154 launches this year, slightly below their target of 170 orbital flights.

To achieve their goal, SpaceX will need to step up its launch frequency. Their plans may get a boost as the Department of the Air Force has approved an increase in launches from their West Coast site, from 36 to 50 annually. Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is reviewing SpaceX’s proposal to increase launches from Florida’s SLC-40 site from 50 to 120 per year. This proposal includes building a booster landing zone to support more landings.
