Spain Faces Urgent Wildfire Threat: 14 Major Blazes on the Rise

Spain is currently facing a severe wildfire crisis. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned of “extreme risk” for new fires as firefighters battle 14 major blazes. The national weather agency has issued alerts for high temperatures and dry conditions, making the situation dire. In some areas, temperatures may soar to 40°C.

This summer’s heatwave has impacted several countries across southeastern Europe, igniting fires in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and beyond. So far, wildfires have consumed more than 157,000 hectares in Spain, with around 6,290 square kilometers burning across the European Union this year. Disturbingly, about 25% of that burning has occurred in Spain.

In Galicia, several smaller fires combined into one large blaze, disrupting road and rail transport. Aerial firefighting efforts have intensified, with Avincis, a leading emergency service provider, reporting a 50% increase in flight hours for firefighting in Spain and Portugal compared to last year.

These wildfires can often be ignited by minor sources, such as barbecue embers or discarded cigarette butts. In Spain, causing a wildfire, even accidentally, is a criminal offense. This year, authorities have arrested 10 individuals on suspicion of arson, highlighting the need for strict accountability in fire safety.
