Noelia Castillo’s life was marked by deep pain—both physical and emotional. In 2024, at just 25 years old, she chose euthanasia, seeking relief from her suffering.
“I want to leave in peace and stop suffering,” she said shortly before her death, during an interview with Spanish news station Antena 3.
Her choice ignited fierce discussions in Spain. Many supported her decision, while others reached out on social media, urging her to reconsider.
Noelia’s struggles began early. After her parents separated when she was 13, she entered a supervised care center and was later diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. She also faced three episodes of sexual abuse but never reported them. In 2022, a failed suicide attempt left her paraplegic, confining her to a wheelchair. This pivotal moment pushed her to contemplate euthanasia.
“Sleeping is very difficult for me, and I have constant back and leg pain,” she shared, noting that her suffering wasn’t solely physical. “My world was very dark… I had no goals, no objectives, nothing.”
Noelia’s euthanasia took place in the Sant Pere de Ribes hospital, where she spent her final days. Spain legalized assisted suicide in June 2021, but for Noelia, the journey was rife with challenges—chiefly from her father, who opposed her decision, claiming she couldn’t make such a choice.
Her request was initially approved on July 18, 2024, by the Catalonia Guarantee and Evaluation Commission. They determined she met the legal criteria due to her chronic condition and severe suffering. However, her father’s legal battle delayed her decision by nearly 20 months, navigating through various courts, all of which upheld her autonomy.
“I understand he doesn’t want to lose a daughter,” Noelia said, expressing her conflicted feelings about their strained relationship. “But why does he want me alive? To keep me in a hospital?”
Ultimately, her resolve allowed her to fulfill her wish. In her last moments, she expressed hope for peace, stating, “I finally did it, and now maybe I can finally rest.” Noelia chose solitude as she departed, asking for privacy in her final moments.
This case highlights the ongoing complexities surrounding euthanasia debates, especially regarding individual choice versus family rights. According to a 2022 survey by the Spanish Health Ministry, nearly 83% of the population supports euthanasia legalization, reflecting evolving societal attitudes towards end-of-life choices.
