Bhubaneswar: In a thrilling match at Kalinga Stadium, Spain’s women’s hockey team edged out India 1-0 in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25. Captain Marta Segu scored the lone goal in the 49th minute, extending Spain’s winning streak to four games.
The first half was tense, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. Spain had an early chance with a penalty corner in the sixth minute, but Savita, India’s goalkeeper, made impressive saves to deny Lucia Jimenez and Berta Serrahima.
India’s Vice Captain, Navneet Kaur, showcased her skills in the 15th minute, driving along the baseline and passing to Sushila Chanu. Unfortunately, the pass was too difficult to handle. Later, Spain was awarded another penalty corner, but Constanza Amundson’s shot went high.
The second quarter saw India stepping up their offense, though they still couldn’t score. Baljeet Kaur won a loose ball but mishandled her pass to Sakshi Rana. A penalty corner followed, but Navneet’s shot didn’t find the target.
In the 29th minute, Florencia Amundson won another penalty corner for Spain, but Vaishnavi Phalke made a critical block, leaving the score unchanged at halftime.
The third quarter was all about Spain’s relentless attack. In the 33rd minute, Patricia Alvarez used her agility to bypass two defenders but Savita showcased her skills again with a brilliant goalline save. Spain pressed on and earned four consecutive penalty corners, yet India’s defense held firm.
As the match neared its end, India received one last penalty corner with just ten seconds left. Unfortunately for them, Navneet’s shot narrowly missed the goal. Spain’s defense was resilient, allowing them to maintain their lead and celebrate another victory in the league.
