Spectacular Night Sky Show: Rare Northern Lights and Glowing Noctilucent Clouds Illuminate Alberta!

On June 9, 2025, Alberta, Canada, treated skywatchers to a breathtaking show: the northern lights combined with rare noctilucent clouds (NLCs). Aurora chaser Harlan Thomas, positioned about 18.5 miles north of Calgary, was lucky enough to witness this unexpected spectacle.

“I didn’t expect to see the aurora since the conditions didn’t indicate it,” Thomas shared in an email. The display was even more striking because the NLCs had to fight through smoke from nearby wildfires and a bright moon.

NLCs are the highest clouds on Earth, floating 47 to 53 miles up. They form in summer when water vapor meets meteoric dust at high altitudes, creating a shimmering effect visible after sunset or before dawn. Their ethereal appearance adds to the allure of the northern lights, making the combination particularly enchanting.

“It’s something special to see both at the same time,” Thomas said. He captured this moment using a Nikon D810 camera, showcasing his skills by creating both a time-lapse and still images.

This is not Thomas’s first brush with such wonders. Back in July 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he famously photographed both NLCs and the Neowise comet alongside the aurora. His keen eye and patience have rewarded him multiple unforgettable experiences in the sky.

According to recent data from NASA, the visibility of NLCs has increased over the years, particularly in the northern hemisphere. This rise is attributed to changes in climate and atmospheric conditions, making them a more common sight for skywatchers.
