Morristown, NJ – The Dolphins celebrated their first win of the season on Friday, defeating Saint Elizabeth University in a lively non-conference game. They scored a remarkable 20 runs, marking Matt Rienzi’s debut victory as head coach of the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
The game was quiet until the fourth inning when the Dolphins struck first with two runs. Graduate student JT Jiminez got the momentum going with a thrilling triple down the right field line. However, the Eagles quickly answered back, scoring four runs in their half of the fourth inning. An RBI from senior Dom Porto helped sophomore Zach Turko home, closing the gap to just one run. Yet, the Eagles extended their lead to 6-3 by the end of the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, the Dolphins exploded for four runs. Graduate student Joey DiNorcia made a bold move by stealing home, while sophomore Andrew Farina hit a home run. This energy carried into the eighth inning, where the Dolphins surged forward with an impressive 12 runs, sealing the game.
Jiminez and senior Stephen Marinez each had three hits, leading the Dolphins. The team tallied 17 RBIs, with Jiminez contributing five. Marinez, Porto, Turko, Farina, and junior Pablo Austin each added two RBIs. On the mound, junior Jake Bland stood out with five strikeouts, while fellow junior Gerjuan Tyrus struck out two in just one inning.
The Dolphins are eager to keep their winning momentum as they head to New Jersey City University on Wednesday, March 5.
