Sphere Entertainment Hires Avatar & Star Wars Tech Visionary to Revolutionize Next-Gen Entertainment

BURBANK, Calif., Feb. 4, 2025 – Sphere Entertainment Co. (NYSE: SPHR) has appointed Glenn Derry as the new Executive Vice President of MSG Ventures. Derry is an Academy Award-winning expert with over 30 years in entertainment technology.

In his new role, Derry will lead various tech initiatives for MSG Ventures, which is part of Sphere Entertainment. This subsidiary focuses on developing advanced technologies for live shows and experiences. It also supports Sphere Studios, where immersive content is created. Derry will help enhance Sphere’s live entertainment offerings, pushing the boundaries of creativity and technology. He will work from Burbank and report to Jim Dolan, the Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere.

According to Dolan, “Our goal with Sphere is to blend advanced technology with storytelling to create experiences that are unique.” He believes Derry’s creative background will help Sphere remain a leader in immersive entertainment.

Derry expressed excitement about joining Sphere, stating that he has always aimed to use technology to strengthen creative visions in entertainment. He looks forward to collaborating with his new team to develop fresh tools and experiences.

Before coming to Sphere, Derry held notable roles in various parts of the film and gaming industry. He was President of Production Technology at AGBO, an independent film and gaming studio. There, he helped create innovative virtual production techniques that enhanced storytelling possibilities.

Prior to AGBO, Derry was the Vice President of Visual Effects at 20th Century Fox after acquiring Technoprops, a company he founded that specialized in motion capture and visual production technology. Under his leadership, Technoprops helped revolutionize the industry by developing a cutting-edge head-mounted camera system for capturing actors’ facial movements. Derry and his team received recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for their pioneering work.

Throughout his career, Derry has worked on major projects like Avatar, Star Wars: Rogue One, Avengers – Age of Ultron, and Halo 4. He began his journey in the industry creating practical effects, such as advanced puppets, before diving into visual effects and virtual production.
