Spiders Shine: Achieving Seventh Best Round in Program History at Statesboro – University of Richmond Athletics

Junior Jack LaPiana led the way for the Richmond Spiders with an impressive 5-under 67 in the second round of Georgia Southern’s Bash in the Boro. As a team, Richmond shot 11-under par, which marked the seventh-best round in the program’s history. This strong performance moved them into fourth place with an overall score of 3-under par (576) after 36 holes.

LaPiana was tied for seventh individually at 5-under par (139). He scored an even-par 72 in the first round but knew he could do better. “I felt like I played pretty solid in the morning but didn’t score as well as I could have,” he said. In the afternoon, he hit some great shots and made key putts, bringing his score down significantly.

His 5-under score is just one shot shy of his personal best, which he achieved in September at the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational. Notably, he excelled on the par 3 holes at Georgia Southern University Golf Club, scoring 2-under par, the best of the field of 81 golfers.

Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron also showed promise, tying for 14th place at 2-under par after rounds of 73 (+1) and 69 (-3). He aims for his second top-20 finish in just three tournaments. Sophomore Carson Baez is tied for 27th at 1-over par (145) and performed well on the par 5s, scoring 7-under, tied for fourth best.

Juniors Quin Polin and Parker Moellinger are tied for 38th at 3-over par (147). Moellinger, playing as an individual, shot 73 (+1) and 74 (+2) on Monday. Polin’s 1-under score contributed to Richmond’s solid round.

Senior Drew Carlin is currently tied for 70th at 11-over par (155).

LaPiana expressed pride in his team’s effort, stating, “It’s nice to see four rounds in red figures. I think we’ve got a lot of good golf in us.”

Overall, Richmond’s second-round performance was nine shots better than any of their scores from the first two events of the season. The Spiders will return to the course on Tuesday morning for the final round at 8:30 AM.

This tournament highlights how team dynamics, player growth, and strategic play can turn a competition around. Whether it’s LaPiana’s determination or Rizo-Patron’s rising talent, each player contributes to Richmond’s promising future in collegiate golf.
