The 41st Film Independent Spirit Awards were held Sunday at the Hollywood Palladium, celebrating the top indie films and TV shows of the past year.
This year’s big winners included Train Dreams, which snagged trophies for Best Feature, Director, and Cinematography. Sorry, Baby also had its moment, winning Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Performance. Alex Russell’s Lurker took home awards for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay. The standout of the evening was Netflix’s series Adolescence, which won four awards, including Best New Scripted Series.
Looking ahead to the Oscars, notable winners like Rose Byrne and Adolpho Veloso could be strong contenders. Byrne won Best Performance for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, while Veloso was honored for his cinematography work on Train Dreams.
The Spirits have shifted their schedule over the years. They used to take place right before the Oscars but now occur in the middle of the awards season. This year marked a new venue, moving from the beach at Barker Hangar to the indoor Palladium.
A comparison to last year shows a trend: Anora, which won multiple awards, also succeeded at the Oscars. Train Dreams is likely to be a strong contender this coming March.
The event was hosted by SNL alum Ego Nwodim, who brought energy and fun to the ceremony.
