Splatsin Announces Successful Negotiations, Ending Sicamous Blockade: What It Means for the Community

After a two-day protest, Splatsin announced that negotiations with Aecon Emil Anderson Construction General Partnership (AEAC GP) successfully resolved the blockade affecting the Bruhn Bridge project. This action halted work and closed Highway 1 in Sicamous, prompting the band and the Splatsin Development Corporation (SDC) to take a stand due to ongoing frustrations over unmet agreements and exclusion from discussions.

A media release on May 14 confirmed that the peaceful protest ended as all parties agreed to come together and rebuild their partnership. “We’re excited about this new chapter,” said Kukpi7 (Chief) Michael Christian. He emphasized the project’s significance within their Area of Caretaker Responsibility and underlined the importance of Splatsin’s involvement.

Christian expressed gratitude to all who participated in the protest, stating that their solidarity reinforced the community’s strength. The discussions have paved the way for Splatsin and SDC to play an essential role in this project, integrating Indigenous perspectives and fostering economic growth.

Grahame Go, CEO of SDC, pointed out that the recent dialogue established a healthier relationship moving forward. “We’re committed to making this project not just a technical success but a relational success as well,” he noted.

AEAC GP also expressed its commitment to collaborative efforts. Colin Taylor, the vice-president, thanked Splatsin and SDC for their willingness to reshape their partnership positively. He highlighted the value of the work done together so far and aims to maintain a strong relationship beyond the project’s completion.

This incident is a reminder of the broader significance of collaboration between Indigenous communities and corporations today. According to a 2022 survey by the National Indigenous Economic Development Board, over 70% of Indigenous respondents believe companies should prioritize meaningful partnerships with Indigenous groups.
