Sporting Kansas City Welcomes Raphael Wicky as New Head Coach: What This Means for the Team

Sporting Kansas City has named Raphael Wicky as their new head coach, pending his P1 visa approval. He has signed a contract lasting until the end of the 2027-28 season, with a club option for 2028-29.

Wicky is the fifth head coach in the club’s history and will report directly to David Lee, the club’s President of Soccer Operations and General Manager.

Wicky expressed his pride in taking this role, saying he is eager to connect with the players and staff. He noted that Sporting KC has a strong culture and a history of competing for trophies. Wicky believes the club has a solid foundation, including excellent facilities and passionate fans.

Lee praised Wicky’s experience and success, highlighting his ability to lead. Wicky’s teams are known for being dynamic, attack-focused, and possession-oriented, which aligns with the style Sporting KC aims to implement.

At 48, Wicky previously coached BSC Young Boys in Switzerland, where he won the 2022-23 Super League and Cup. His record at Young Boys was impressive: 51 wins, 17 losses, and 20 draws, averaging over two goals per game. He secured a domestic double in his first season, finishing 16 points ahead of the competition.

Before joining Young Boys, Wicky led the U.S. Under-17 National Team, achieving notable success, and coached the Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer (MLS). He started his coaching journey in Switzerland, working with youth teams before moving to FC Basel, where he had a strong showing in UEFA competitions.

Wicky’s playing career is equally noteworthy. He represented Switzerland 75 times and played in major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup. He enjoyed success with clubs in Switzerland and Germany, winning several national titles.

Bringing a wealth of experience and a winning mindset, Wicky appears poised to make a significant impact at Sporting Kansas City. As the club looks to reclaim its place among the elite, fans are eager to see how his coaching philosophy will shape the team’s future.
