FLAGSTAFF, AZ — On Tuesday, around 1,000 families gathered at Northern Arizona University for the Flagstaff Family Food Center’s holiday food distribution.
Volunteers worked tirelessly, directing traffic and loading food into cars. Ceara Chirovsky, vice president of the food center, highlighted the increasing need in the community. “This is particularly crucial this year,” she said, noting a 30% rise in food requests.
Chirovsky shared, “As we prepared for this event, we did not foresee the recent government shutdown, which has added to the growing need.”
Sandie Daw, a Flagstaff resident, joined the line to secure food for elderly people in her community. She expressed the importance of the food drive, especially for Native Americans. “Many struggle daily just to get enough to eat,” Daw explained.
The event provided everything from turkey to pies for a thousand families. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of 250 volunteers. One of those was professor Olutosin Taiwo, who emphasized the impact of giving back. “By volunteering, I help make someone’s Thanksgiving possible,” Taiwo said. “If we’re not here, the food won’t reach those who need it.”
