Stephon Castle had one clear goal: he wanted to be the Rookie of the Year. And he achieved it by a wide margin.

The San Antonio Spurs now have back-to-back winners of this coveted award. Last year, it was Victor Wembanyama; this year, it’s Castle. He is the fifth rookie in Spurs history to score more than 1,000 points in a single season.

In the voting, Castle completely dominated. He earned 92 first-place votes, leaving runner-up Zaccharie Risacher from the Atlanta Hawks far behind, who received only five. Third place went to Jaylen Wells of the Memphis Grizzlies, who got three. The total points for each candidate reflected Castle’s clear victory.

“I came in with a lot of confidence, and being Rookie of the Year was definitely a goal from Day 1,” Castle said during the announcement on TNT. “I’m just happy I was able to achieve it.”

Castle’s win is notable. It’s only the second time in over 50 years that one franchise has produced back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners. The last time it happened was with Minnesota’s Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Before that, Bob McAdoo and Ernie DiGregorio did it for the Buffalo Braves in the early ’70s.

Chris Paul, Castle’s teammate, praised his competitiveness: “The first thing I want in a teammate is how competitive they are. Castle showed me right away that he had that drive. It made my job easier.”

Castle not only led all rookies in points, with a total of 1,190, but also in steals, racking up 74. Meanwhile, Risacher completed a strong season, earning the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month titles in both February and March. Wells made waves by starting 74 games and matching the rookie record for three-pointers made, finishing with 138. This record ties him with Washington’s Bub Carrington.

Risacher, originally from France like Wembanyama, aimed to be part of a rare streak of international players winning the award two years in a row. Wells sought to follow in the footsteps of Ja Morant, Memphis’s Rookie of the Year in 2020.

The Rookie of the Year award was determined by a global panel of 100 writers and broadcasters who cover the NBA. They cast their votes shortly after the regular season concluded.

Castle’s victory shines a light on the Spurs’ promising future. Recent reports show that young talent is crucial for building winning teams in the NBA. In fact, about 30% of recent championship teams relied heavily on young stars. This trend emphasizes how vital rookies like Castle are to a franchise’s success.

Other award winners announced include Cleveland’s Evan Mobley as Defensive Player of the Year and New York’s Jalen Brunson as Clutch Player of the Year.

As we look ahead, the next award to be revealed is Most Improved Player, with candidates including Cade Cunningham of Detroit and Ivica Zubac from the Los Angeles Clippers. This announcement will also air on TNT.
