Square Enix, a big name in gaming, recently shared that it plans to lay off workers in North America and Europe. This move is part of a larger restructuring effort. The company wants to streamline operations by closing some studios abroad and focusing development mainly in Japan. They’ve set a goal to combine their HD Games publishing departments from 11 to just 4.
This changes the company’s financial outlook as well. They estimate a restructuring cost of about 11.8 billion yen (around $76.8 million) for the fiscal year ending in March 2026. However, they expect to save over 3 billion yen (around $19.5 million) annually from these changes. The aim is to boost their global publishing abilities and improve how they operate.
Reports say that layoffs could begin soon, with some jobs at risk in the UK and the US. In the UK, the number of layoffs might be around 137, though this number may change due to legal requirements for consultations.
In May 2022, Square Enix sold several studios, including Crystal Dynamics, to Embracer Group, highlighting their ongoing transformation.
In addition to layoffs, the company is also looking to enhance productivity through artificial intelligence (AI). They are collaborating with the University of Tokyo’s Matsuo Laboratory to develop tools that could automate up to 70% of quality assurance and debugging tasks by the end of 2027. This could significantly change how games are developed, making the process faster and more efficient.
Interestingly, Square Enix recently joined other Japanese companies in criticizing the AI tool Sora2, which they believe creates content similar to their original works. This shows the growing tension between traditional content creators and new AI technologies.
Financially, Square Enix reported net sales of 133.8 billion yen (about $871 million) for the first half of the fiscal year 2026. This marks a 15% drop from last year, but they also reported an operating income jump of 29%, reaching 27.2 billion yen (about $177 million).
Square Enix’s history is rich, with its roots tracing back to 1975 when Enix was founded. In 2002, it merged with Square, creating a powerhouse in the gaming world.
As these changes unfold, it will be interesting to see how Square Enix adapts and continues to innovate in an increasingly competitive industry.
