‘Squid Game 2’ Takes Over Streaming in India: 2024 Ormax Study Highlights Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar’s Impressive Performance

Season two of “Squid Game” has taken India by storm in 2024. It has become the most-watched international series, amassing a whopping 19.6 million viewers, according to Ormax Media. This success sets it apart from other global titles in the country.

In the Hindi-speaking audience, Prime Video’s “Mirzapur” Season 3 leads with 30.8 million viewers, followed closely by “Panchayat” Season 3 at 28.2 million. Netflix has also made its mark in Hindi films, grabbing 11 of the top 15 spots, including the very top with “Do Patti,” which attracted 15.1 million viewers.

For unscripted content, “Bigg Boss OTT” Season 3 tops the list with 17.8 million viewers. This is followed by Netflix’s “The Great Indian Kapil Show” Season 1, which attracted 15.7 million viewers.

Broadening the scope beyond Hindi, Disney+ Hotstar has become prominent in the regional content scene. It leads the Telugu-language market with four entries in the top ten, while the Tamil space features seven of their shows. “Save The Tigers” Season 2 is a hit in Telugu, gathering 5 million viewers, while Prime Video’s “Inspector Rishi” takes the lead in Tamil with 4.9 million.

In the international film realm, Prime Video’s “Road House” stands out, crossing the 5 million viewer mark. Prime Video shows strength with six of the top ten films, leaving Netflix with the remaining four.

Franchises are a major theme this year, particularly in international content. Seven of the top ten shows are part of existing series. Notable mentions include “The Boys” Season 4, with 10.5 million viewers, and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 racking up 8.8 million viewers.

According to Ormax’s ratings, “Panchayat” Season 3 is the most well-liked Hindi series with a score of 77. “Squid Game” Season 2 follows closely in the international category with a score of 73. Among international films, Netflix’s “Spaceman” leads with 62 points, trailed by Disney+ Hotstar’s “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” at 61 points.

The report also notes trends in viewer engagement. “Mirzapur” Season 3 achieved a buzz score of 63%, the highest for any streaming show in 2024, making it third all-time after its own predecessors “Mirzapur” Season 2 and “The Family Man” Season 2.

This analysis focuses strictly on streaming originals, leaving out theatrical releases and other non-original content. The research was conducted across India to reflect the streaming universe accurately.
