Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending a crucial oil shipment. This delivery, which includes 20,000 MT of diesel and 18,000 MT of petrol, arrived in Colombo over the weekend. The shipment is part of emergency support from the Indian Oil Corporation and Lanka IOC.
Dissanayake acknowledged the timely assistance in a recent social media post. He explained how he discussed the fuel supply challenges Sri Lanka is facing due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. He also thanked Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for his coordination and support in addressing these issues.
Sri Lanka has faced significant fuel supply disruptions, leading to difficulties in securing supplies from Middle Eastern and Singaporean sources. Since mid-March, the country has instituted fuel quotas to manage shortages and prevent hoarding. Many who stockpiled fuel have faced legal action as the government seeks to control the situation. The energy ministry has assured that there will be enough fuel available at least until the end of May.
This situation highlights a broader challenge for nations dependent on imports for energy. According to recent data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), global oil demand is expected to increase, putting even more pressure on supply chains. Countries like Sri Lanka must navigate these complexities as they secure energy resources amid global tensions.
