INDIANAPOLIS — Fans expected a tough match, and that’s exactly what they got.
St. John’s thrives in battles, and this game was no different. They faced off against Butler in a gritty contest that showcased their resilience. Despite not playing at their best, the seventh-ranked Johnnies secured a 76-70 win, bringing them a step closer to the Big East title.
In this game, St. John’s struggled with rebounds and had trouble from beyond the arc. They started strong, quickly taking a double-digit lead, but they couldn’t shake off a determined Butler team. However, when it mattered most, St. John’s made the crucial plays to secure the victory.
This win positions them to claim their first outright Big East title since 1985. They have also set a new record for the most league wins in a single season with 16. Chief among their players, RJ Luis Jr., expressed that while they’re proud of their accomplishments, they’re focused on clinching the title outright on Saturday against Seton Hall.
“We put in a lot of work this season,” Luis noted. “We want the title all to ourselves.”
In the final moments, Zuby Ejiofor stepped up, scoring important points to help seal the win. Luis added crucial free throws, ensuring St. John’s maintained their lead. The team locked down defensively, outscoring Butler 16-7 in the final stretch.
Coach Rick Pitino highlighted the team’s ability to make the right plays when it counted. Despite the victory, there were no celebrations, as the focus has shifted to the next challenge.
Luis led St. John’s with 24 points, supported by Kadary Richmond with 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Jahmyl Tefort contributed 13 points for Butler.
The game started with St. John’s racing ahead, hitting their first four shots and forcing a Butler timeout early. However, they cooled down significantly, managing just 21 points in the second half of the first period. Foul trouble limited Ejiofor’s impact, allowing Butler to stay competitive.
After halftime, Butler quickly clawed back into the game, tying it up before St. John’s rallied again. Luis regained the lead for St. John’s, following up with a dunk that energized the team and their fans.
“This is what our season has been about—facing ups and downs and pushing through,” Ejiofor shared.
Saturday promises to be electrifying at Madison Square Garden. St. John’s hopes for another packed crowd, aiming to defend their home court against Seton Hall. After last season’s disappointment, they are eager to celebrate their achievements this time, with a shot at history on the line.
“Every game feels special this season,” Luis said. “We have a chance to make history at the Garden, and we’re ready for it.”
