St. Lawrence University Welcomes Cook as New Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach

CANTON — Exciting news for the St. Lawrence University men’s basketball team! They’ve just welcomed Kaleb Cook as their new graduate assistant coach starting in the 2025-26 season.

Kaleb is no stranger to competitive basketball. He recently finished his playing career at Oswego State, a nationally-ranked Division III team. “We’re thrilled to have Kaleb join us in North Country,” said head coach Chris Downs. “He was a standout player and will definitely influence our team culture.”

During his time at Oswego State (2019-2024), Kaleb served as captain for three years, leading the Lakers to SUNYAC championships in his first two seasons. In his senior year, he helped his team achieve an impressive record of 26-3 and maintained an undefeated conference mark of 18-0.

After hanging up his jersey, Kaleb transitioned to coaching. He was most recently an assistant coach at Bridgewater College in Virginia, where he crafted game plans, scouted opponents, and identified promising talent from high schools.

Originally from Auburn, Kaleb has also made an impact as an AAU head coach for HoopRoots in Syracuse since 2023. His experience will surely bring fresh perspectives and energy to St. Lawrence’s program.

In this fast-evolving landscape of college sports, it’s noteworthy that coaching roles are increasingly filled by former athletes. According to a recent survey by the NCAA, about 70% of college coaches in various sports have previous collegiate playing experience. This trend underscores the importance of having mentors who understand the game first-hand, like Kaleb.

As Kaleb steps into his new role, the St. Lawrence community awaits the impact he will have on the players and the overall team dynamics. It’s a great time for both him and the program as they aim for future successes.
