St. Luke’s Auxiliary has stepped up with a generous $250,000 donation to support Club 520, a peer-run mental health support group offered through the Abbe Center for Community Mental Health. This initiative is a lifeline for adults battling mental health issues or substance use disorders, focusing on the power of connection.

Cheryl Schatzle, the Abbe Center supervisor for community-based services, highlights the positive impact of social connections on health. "Having social connections is important and can improve quality of life," she says. The staff at Club 520 includes peer support specialists who know firsthand what it’s like to struggle with mental health issues. They offer understanding and guidance to others as they navigate their recovery journeys.
Club 520 isn’t just a support group; it’s a vibrant community hub filled with activities. From educational lunch-and-learns to fun projects like cooking and crafts, there’s something for everyone. Members enjoy karaoke, board games, and special holiday events. They can also participate in offsite activities such as bowling and picnics. Many find comfort in simply sharing a cup of coffee and chatting, fostering a sense of belonging.
Mike Meyer, a peer support specialist at Club 520, underscores the community’s importance. “We have people waiting in the hall at noon for us to open – it’s that important to them,” he explains. He emphasizes that the program is flexible and allows individuals to take charge of their recovery. “If this program had been available when I was first struggling with mental health, it would have improved my quality of life,” he adds, noting that being a part of Club 520 has given him a renewed sense of purpose.
In a promising development, Club 520 will move to a new space later this year at 615 5th Street SE, the former Stamats building in Cedar Rapids. This larger facility will enhance its capacity to support even more community members.
Recent studies show the significance of peer support in mental health recovery. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), peer support programs can help reduce symptoms and increase participants’ quality of life. Such findings highlight the importance of community-driven initiatives like Club 520.
As society continues to focus on mental health awareness, groups like Club 520 remind us of the essential role connection plays in healing. Whether through structured activities or simple conversations, every interaction counts toward building a stronger, supportive community.
