St. Luke’s Hospital Unveils Groundbreaking AI Technology for Early Detection of Colon Cancer

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — St. Luke’s Hospital is stepping up its fight against colon cancer with new AI technology.

This innovative tool, called the Medtronic GI Genius™ module, is a first-of-its-kind AI-assisted colonoscopy device approved by the FDA. It helps doctors spot early signs of precancerous polyps.

The American Cancer Society reports that colorectal cancer is a major health concern. It ranks as the third-leading cause of cancer death in men and fourth in women, making it the second-most common cause of cancer fatalities in the U.S.

Dr. Douglas Purdy from St. Luke’s Gastroenterology emphasizes the importance of early detection. He says this new technology can really make a difference.

“The introduction of the GI Genius is an advancement in colorectal cancer prevention,” says Dr. Purdy. “Using AI allows us to better find precancerous polyps that might be missed otherwise. This means better care for our patients through earlier detection and treatment. We’re proud to bring this technology to our community.”

The GI Genius™ module works by combining AI software with advanced visual tools. It highlights polyps in real-time during colonoscopies.

Studies show that this module can lower the chances of missing adenomas and polyps by about 46%.
