St. Peter’s AME Church in Clarksville has started a community food pantry called the Grocery Grab Giveaway. This initiative aims to assist those in need, particularly seniors and students from Austin Peay State University.
Dr. Johnnie Smith, who helps run the pantry, has worked with organizations like Loaves and Fishes to support the local community for years. He explained that the church decided it was time to establish its own food pantry because they recognized a growing need. They officially opened the pantry in December 2025.
Each weekend, the pantry welcomes guests to pick up food. It’s open on Sundays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., but people can also make appointments on Saturdays. “Many in Montgomery County struggle to find enough food,” Smith noted. This pantry aims to bridge that gap, especially for those who might feel hesitant to ask for help.
While everyone is welcome, the church focuses on supporting seniors and college students. Smith praised Loaves and Fishes for their role in helping launch the pantry.
Recently, St. Peter’s introduced the “One-Dollar Campaign,” where donations are matched, doubling the impact. They also plan to assist students facing homelessness by providing full meals and groceries.
Local nonprofits and community programs like this one are vital, especially now. A recent study from Feeding America found that over 38 million people in the U.S. experienced food insecurity in 2021. Food pantries are essential lifelines in these situations.
